{ spreading luck }

Today, 1st of may  is a holiday in France … we celebrate   la fête du travail, our labour day … Besides  we share one of my favorite popular tradition : offering des brins de  muguet to each other . It’s a way to wish luck, prosperity and happyness to your loved ones. You usually will see  people in the streets, on road edges … in front of shops selling lily of the valley. Mostly  teenagers or studetns to get some pocket cash  … I don’t have to buy some and I have a whole bunch of them in my backyard to distribute …
It is about  noon here , and I’ve  already found 4  little bouquets on my front porch …

muguet

My intention for today’s post was to take a shot of my beautiful lily of the valley  … but it 's raining dogs and cats …and  cows and frogs ….Yep … it is REALLY raining …You do not want me to catch a cold, don’t you ? This pictures above and below  were taken a few days ago. They are in a full bloom now …

muguet

Now I am waiting for a sunny spell for my muguet picking ….I have a big distribution planned … The morning was hectic but now I am ready.
We traditionally go to a very colorful  flower fair during the 1st of may afternoon … We may have to skip it this year…

I wish you all a very happy 1er mai and I am virtually [but from- the – bottom – of –my – heart-y ] sending you a lily of the valley to bring you joy and happyness.

Our Lily of the Valley in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the USA are still shoots of green spears today. We celebrated May Day when I was little, but that has gone by the way side. We would make up tiny baskets, fill them with candies, set them on neighbors steps, ring their bell and run.

Wow, what a beautiful post. Thanks for the lily of the valley. They are some of my favorite flowers and they used to grow in my backyard when I was young. I haven't seen them for years though. I wish we had this tradition here in Montreal...

thank you so much for sharing this story! i was in paris for may day a couple of years ago, and my husband and i spent most of the day trying to figure out what the lilies of the valley being sold everywhere were all about. i'm so excited to finally have an explanation.

happy may day!

Our Lilies of the Valley haven't bloomed yet...but we have them growing like weeds in our front yard. I just love them!
